UN force confirms existence of tunnel in Israel near Lebanon border

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) confirmed on Thursday the presence of a tunnel on the border between Lebanon and Israel.

The tunnel originated under a residential building in the southern Lebanese village of Ramieh.

UNIFIL "visited a location" near Metulla in northern Israel, it said, and "can confirm the existence of a tunnel at the location".

During UNIFIL's fact-finding mission, the commanding officer of Israel's Northern Command Maj. Mudallali stressed that Israel's actions are a violation of United Nations resolution 1701, which was approved resolve the Israel-Lebanon conflict and ended the 2006 Second Lebanon War.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took Israel-based diplomats to the border with southern Lebanon Thursday, showing them the site of a "Hezbollah" tunnel and calling for sanctions against the group.
