Tornadoes rip through Midwest, killing 1 and damaging hundreds of homes

The National Weather Service received 22 reports of tornadoes in the state, and offices in Lincoln, Ill. and St. Louis, Mo. have sent out survey teams to affected areas to determine a count on how many tornadoes broke out across the state. Its path was intermittent and mostly caused damage to trees and to some structures.

IL typically sees 47 tornadoes a year but that doesn't include December, which doesn't have a monthly average, CNN Meteorologist Allison Chinchar said.

The warning helped residents take cover and may have saved lives.

At least 13 tornadoes downed power lines and flipped cars in the hardest hit areas of central IL. Around 20 people were injured, but there were no deaths.

IL residents are still recovering Saturday morning after multiple tornadoes touched down in the central part of the state. In that same period, 55 tornadoes total have been recorded statewide during the month of December. That tornado traveled about 7 miles (11 kilometers) just past the town of Gore. No injuries have been reported.

Central Illinois residents assessed the damage Monday after rare December tornadoes, including one that was a half-mile-wide and injured at least 20 people. He said at least 100 homes had major damage, including his own.

A Taylorville Memorial Hospital spokesman said 21 people, ages 9 to 97, arrived for treatment Saturday. Most were discharged within hours.

"Internet service, phone service, the ability to monitor the weather, the ability to track resources and things like that, so that's the type of support that asset will provide", said Buckingham. Several agencies report to the operations center, including the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, Department of Public Health and the American Red Cross.

"It was one of those storms that just blew up", Christian County sheriff Bruce Kettelkamp told reporters on Saturday.
