Marvel's real life hero Stan Lee has died, aged 95

Early Monday morning, an ambulance was rushed to Stan Lee's home in Hollywood Hills and took him to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where the Marvel Comics co-creator passed away at 95 years old.

After playing an instrumental role in creating beloved characters like Spider-Man, the Avengers, X-Men, Black Panther and more, Lee become an icon of the comics world, with his reach and influence growing in tandem with Marvel's expansion into its cinematic universe.

Lee's career began in 1939 when he was an assistant at Timely Comics, which would eventually develop into Marvel Comics. Later years would see Lee appear in many iconic cameo scenes in Marvel movies, starting with X-men in 2000 and continuing on through every Marvel movie to date since 2008's Iron Man. He's known by the MCU generation of fans due to his numerous cameos in the Marvel films. He remained chairman emeritus.

It wasn't just that Lee created these characters; his work also upended expectations within the comic book industry.

Marvel creator Stan Lee has died, he was 95. "Stan leaves an extraordinary legacy that will outlive us all", he wrote on Twitter.

He hit his stride in the 1960s when he brought the Fantastic Four, the Hulk, Spider-Man, Iron Man and numerous others to life.

Lee's wife and partner in almost everything, Joan Lee, died on July 6, 2017, leaving a void that made her husband, by then in mental and physical decline, vulnerable to hangers-on who began to surround him.
