The Cancer Care Specialist with the Ministry of Health and Wellness, Dr. Owen Gabriel, encourages women particularly during breast cancer awareness month, to get screened for breast cancer.

Joan Bauman was a 45-year-old mother of four running ultramarathons when a lump in her breast grew more painful.

Most patients diagnosed with breast cancer will be able to choose between a lumpectomy (where only the cancer is removed with a rim of normal breast tissue around it) and a mastectomy (where all of the breast tissue is removed surgically). After an initial screening, women (again, of average risk) should be screened every one or two years, per their doctor's recommendations.

Over the past five years, the organization has helped almost 300 women. most in their 20's, 30's and early 40's.

When she was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012, Denise Valley went all out for October - think organized brunches with drag queen performers and nights on the town with a pink stretch limo.

He also says there are people who have genetic predisposition where cancers run in the family.

This year she raised $3,200 for the walk alone, and has raised over $17,000 in the five years she's done the 3K. Surgery has components; there is the breast sparing surgery where a specific mass is removed by taking out the lesion.

Petition organiser Terre Nicholson said the "desperately" needed medicines would add years to affected women's lives.
