Paul Pogba named Manchester United captain against Leicester

He has been linked with moves to Barcelona and Juventus after sources told ESPN FC the 25-year-old was unhappy at some of Mourinho's criticism of him during the summer.

Jose Mourinho claims he "needed six changes not three" in Manchester United's season opener, with Anthony Martial seeing no game as other options had to take priority.

Mourinho was particularly annoyed to miss out on a series of centre-back targets, including Leicester's Harry Maguire who shone for England in Russian Federation. "The likes of Varane, who has proved himself to be one of the best defenders on the planet right now, I think he will be too far to go and get him, the amount of money. We have to keep this way and build something strong for the next games".

Martial remained on the bench, having been criticised by his manager for not returning to United's pre-season tour after the birth of his son, but the Portuguese coach says he would have been a flawless impact sub against Leicester.

Despite aiming his ire at the United board, Mourinho did have some positive things to say about Paul Pogba, who was captain for the night, scored and put in a man-of-the-match performance after a preseason spanning four days and returning to Carrington on Monday.

United had several chances to extend its lead against a Leicester side that called goalkeeper David De Gea into action more often than Mourinho would have liked. The players gave everything, they gave what they had.

"I am very pleased for Luke".

Vardy pulled a goal back deep into stoppage time when he stooped to head in after Ricardo Pereira's cross came back off the post, and United were forced to see out a nervy final few minutes to get off to a winning start.

Just after his side beat Leicester City 2-1, the Portuguese coach cut an upset figure in front of the Sky Sports cameras about the lack of new faces through the door at United.

"It was not easy to manage the game from the touchline".

"I think it will be a hard season for everybody, but I think it's the last time we speak about it".

It's Shaw's victor. He scored his first senior team goal with a lovely move around his defender and a fine finish to the far post.
