Chinese bombers likely training for USA strikes: Pentagon

The Pentagon's new report on the Chinese regime's military says that People's Liberation Army (PLA) bombers are likely training for strikes against US and allied targets, and that a massive fleet of maritime militia controlled by Beijing is being used to support the regime's aggression in the South China Sea and beyond.

"We urge the USA side to abandon the outdated cold-war and zero-sum mentality..."

The U.S. Department of Defense's 2018 report to Congress also distorted relations and situation across the Taiwan Strait, said Wu Qian, the spokesperson for China's Ministry of National Defense, Friday.

The Pentagon sounded a warning over China's plans to introduce floating nuclear power plants on disputed islands and reefs in the South China Sea (SCS), part of annual report assessing the nation's military strength.

The annual report generally looks at countries the USA thinks could challenge its military dominance, said Li Haidong, a U.S. studies researcher at China Foreign Affairs University.

China has voiced strong opposition to a report by the US Defense Department on China's military and security developments, saying it misinterprets China's strategic intentions and hypes a so-called Chinese military threat.

The ministry said the military is strengthening its capability to protect the country's sovereignty and ensure global peace.

While 89 South Koreans were lucky enough to be selected, for thousands of other Koreans, time is running out. Many are bringing gifts like clothes, medicine and food for their relatives in the much poorer North.

With recent tests, China may be trying to show off its "capability to strike USA and allied forces and military bases in the western Pacific Ocean, including Guam", the report said, according to BBC News.

"China's development of national defense aims to safeguard its national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, which is the lawful rights for a sovereign state to exercise".

The statement asks Washington to abandon its "Cold War mentality" and defends the "Chinese military's reform, weapons development and defensive capabilities in the internet space" as "just and reasonable".

The real threat to regional peace and stability is the USA sending warplanes and ships to the South China Sea in the name of "freedom of navigation", he said.

The document also shines a light on China's ongoing military preparations for a "contingency" in the Taiwan Strait.

In January the Pentagon put countering Beijing, along with Russian Federation, at the center of a new national defense strategy.

"The deployment and integration of nuclear capable bombers would, for the first time, provide China with a nuclear "triad" of delivery systems dispersed across land, sea, and air", the report said.
