No Roseanne in spin-off

ABC has picked up a spin-off tentatively titled The Conners, after the hit sitcom revival was embroiled in controversy following star and executive producer Barr's racist tweets.

After seemingly endless speculation about the future of a ROSEANNE show without star Roseanne Barr, ABC has made it official: a spinoff show now titled THE CONNERS has received a 10-episode order at the network, with Barr not returning.

"I agreed to the settlement in order that 200 jobs of beloved cast and crew could be saved, and I wish the best for everyone involved", she said.

Shortly after the end of the 2018 reboot's first season, Barr tweeted racist comments about former White House advisor Valerie Jarrett.

The new show was ordered from producer Werner Entertainment without a pilot episode, the typical basis for a series to be greenlit. Barr subsequently apologized for the tweet, later blaming it on her consumption of the sleeping drug Ambien. Even before ABC's official announcement, Twitter users were mockingly speculating as to how the show might rid itself of the character of Roseanne Conner.

ABC Entertainment announced plans Thursday night to keep the famous Connor family on the air - but not on "Roseanne". "What's more, if she retains the rights to the character for any future uses (including bringing Roseanne Conner somewhere else), then this is all enormously helpful to her prospects, compared to, say, putting the entire show in a great big bag, setting it on fire and throwing it into a ravine".

After getting the chance last season to tell stories about challenges facing working-class family, they're glad to "continue to share those stories through love and laughter", the actors said.

Tom Werner issued a statement that Barr and he had reached an agreement to greenlight the spinoff without her creative involvement or financial involvement. "The spinoff will continue to portray contemporary issues that are as relevant today as they were 30 years ago", ABC shared in a statement.

"We have received a tremendous amount of support from fans of our show, and it's clear that these characters not only have a place in our hearts, but in the hearts and homes of our audience", they said in a joint statement.

ABC has not yet revealed how its infamous star will be written out of the series, but promises to depict the Conners' lives after "a sudden turn of events".

The show will start in the autumn and is expected to have Roseanne's daughter Darlene, played by Sara Gilbert, as the main protagonist.
