This highly visible seat belt enforcement period begins on May 21 and runs through June 3, covering the busy Memorial Day holiday weekend.

The remaining 5 percent are the focus of the latest seat belt campaign.

"Using a seat belt is the simplest way for a driver and his or her passengers to protect themselves when traveling", said Gary Poedubicky, acting director of the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety.

"In 2016, we lost 224 Oklahomans because they weren't buckled up", said Cody McDonell, communications manager for the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office. In the following years, the state's seat belt usage rate rose and by 2002 the rate was 82 percent.

The Pennsylvania State Police are joining PennDOT and law enforcement agencies across the country for the national "Click It or Ticket" seat belt enforcement campaign.

An increased police presence will stress the proper use of seat belts and making sure all young passengers are properly restrained inside moving vehicles with auto seats or booster seats.

During the 2017 "Click it or Ticket" campaign, 350 New Jersey police agencies participated in the two-week initiative.

Governor Roy Cooper has proclaimed May as Seat Belt Safety Awareness Month. Motor vehicle occupants who buckle up increase their chances of surviving a crash by as much as 75 percent. If they're caught, they'll get a $136 ticket. "Help us spread this life-saving message before one more friend or family member is killed as a result of this senseless inaction". "Adults should wear a seat belt - every trip, every time - and ensure children are properly buckled in an appropriate child passenger safety seat".
