Weeks later, a second accident involving a USA diplomat and a motorcyclist also made headlines in the country but resulted only in minor injuries.

Ateeq Baig, 22, had died on the spot. A case was registered but he was never formally arrested due to diplomatic immunity. The statements of the survivors and Baig's father were recorded by the police.

The diplomat - described as the defense attache in an earlier report - departed Islamabad late Monday, a senior Pakistani government official told AFP on condition of anonymity. According to sources, the local police has handed over all record related to Colonel Hall to USA officials. A security official, part of Colonel Hall's security detail, had been arrested on the orders of AIG Islamabad for obstructing a police officer from performing his duty, a source had said.

On April 7, Colonel Joseph Emanuel Hall ran a red light and rammed into a motorcycle killing a Pakistani civilian. Hall's family was, however, permitted to leave.

Officials at the foreign ministry said Hall was a diplomat and Pakistan's criminal, civil, and administrative laws were not applicable to him.
