Weightlifting gold rush continues, Punam claims fifth for India

Indian weightlifters are on an absolute rampage at Commonwealth Games 2018 and the latest one to add to the stellar medal tally for India is Punam Yadav who stood at the top podium on Sunday. India now have won 12 medals so far, including seven gold, two silver and three bronze.

From the shooting ranges in Brisbane to the weightlifting arena here, it was all about women on Sunday.

The super teenager Manu Bhaker comfortably won the precious yellow metal in women's 10 air pistol while Heena Sidhu staged a remarkable recovery to secure silver at Gold Coast on day four of the 21st Commonwealth Games. That's why it's important not to think too much.

This is not the first time that she has secured a medal at an global sporting event as she has earlier secured a bronze medal in the same weight category at the Commonwealth Games of 2014 that were held in Glasgow, Scotland.

Fiji's Apolonia Vaivai won the bronze medal with a combined lift of 216kg. This is India's fifth gold gold medal at the games.

In shooting, Ravi Kumar let slip a golden opportunity to settle for a bronze medal in the 10m air rifle event where Deepak Kumar finished sixth after breaking the Games record in qualification. "She was capable of pulling it off", Yadav said after the medal ceremony.
