In case you feel the lack of a Volkswagen midsize pickup truck is a significant omission, there might be good news for you: Automotive News Europe is reporting that VW could be bringing a pickup concept to the New York Auto Show.
The automaker is set to reveal a pickup concept at the New York Auto Show on Wednesday, Automotive News reports.
Volkswagen may be hitching a ride on an all-American pickup.
Already at the show, a concept version of a five-seat SUV based on the Atlas is slated to be displayed for the first time. The New York auto show runs March 30-April 8 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center, 11th Avenue between 34th and 40th streets in New York City.
The Atlas is now VW's second best-selling model. With consumer preferences shifting toward trucks and utilities, the company is clearly looking at ways to expand the variety of offerings. "The Atlas. and its coming five-seat derivative can get that since both can be sold in China [as the Teramont], but a pickup like this would likely just be for the USA and Canadian market".
A softer MQB-based "lifestyle" pickup truck would give VW a product to help turn around its battling U.S. division, and would be the only such vehicle from a German car-maker there at present. That news came after Volkswagen confirmed that the T-Roc concept unveiled in Europe late a year ago would not make its way across the pond.
