As his school copes with the loss of 17 students and faculty members, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School principal Ty Thompson is pledging to help students get through the tragedy. Two gun shows and a rally calling for the firearm safety legislation are due to be held nearby.

Also Friday, mourners gathered for the first funeral for a shooting victim, packing the Star of David chapel to remember 14-year-old Alyssa Alhadeff.

"I wasn't able to do anything about it. I was numb. There was no feeling going on, so I can't give you an honest answer to that, '" Lazarus recalled. "Our kids should be safe".

Cruz was booked on 17 counts of premeditated murder on Thursday.

"The caller provided information about Cruz's gun ownership, desire to kill people, erratic behaviour, and disturbing social media posts, as well as the potential of him conducting a school shooting", it said.

The Broward Schools superintendent said parents and students have overwhelmingly expressed their reluctance to ever return to the building. People who knew Mr Cruz have described the student as troubled. They passed these on to law enforcement. "It's going to be a mark on their name forever".

In the days following the attack, students who were caught in the crossfire at the school took politicians to task in the media and online. Some took politicians to task on Twitter.

Nationally, almost 1,300 children (17 years old and younger) die from gunshot wounds each year, and 5,790 are treated for injuries, according to a recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report.

United States President Donald Trump too focused on the young man's mental health. Some teens have been critical of Trump for failing to mention guns in his comments about the attack.
