Jason Day in the PGA mix at Pebble Beach

World number one and twice victor Dustin Johnson birdied five of his first 11 holes to sit two strokes behind the opening-round leaders on Thursday at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am on the Monterey Peninsula in California.

Lowry made a solitary birdie four at the 12th to go out in one-under at Monterey Peninsula's Shore Course before he sparked into life, holing his second for an eagle two at the 495-yard first before making two at the ninth en route to a bogey-free 67. After facing Pebble Beach Golf Links today, he will set his eyes on Spyglass Hill in round two. "Drove it nice and put it on the greens and made a lot of putts".

"Getting out first was nice", said Streelman, a two-time victor on the US PGA Tour who hit 12 of 14 fairways and 11 of 18 greens - and managed to get up and down at all seven of the greens he missed.

"I hit a lot of greens, had a lot of pretty good looks at birdie", Hossler said.

Johnson, competing in his first PGA Tour event since his runaway victory in Kapalua last month, carded a five-under-par 67 at Spyglass Hill, which is considered the toughest of the three venues being used for this week's event.

Four-time major victor Rory McIlroy opened his US PGA Tour account for the year with a 68 at Spyglass Hill to share 16th at four under with a logjam of players including world No.2 Jon Rahm.
