F1: Renault's 'extensive dyno work' targets reliability gains

"We are a team on the rise", Renault Sport Racing president Jerome Stoll said in a statement.

Renault has unveiled its auto for the 2018 Formula One season, the R.S.18. The vehicle, which features a revised livery from a year ago, will be driven by Nico Hulkenberg and Carlos Sainz this season. Furthermore, improvements have been made to Renault's Enstone factory in the past year, allowing the expanded team to put their affluence to good use.

"We want to develop performance and also balance reliability, which in turn enables the team to develop the understanding of the auto. We have two very talented drivers who are hungry for results", Stoll added.

"Our investment has so far been successfully translated to the track as we rose from ninth to sixth in the Constructors' Championship in 2017 and ended the year with the fourth-fastest vehicle".

But Cyril Abiteboul, Managing Director of Renault Sport Racing, is being very open minded and cautious about what his team can acheive this season.

"We did see our power unit on the top step of the podium three times previous year, so it's clear we have the potential to achieve our aspirations", said Taffin. I am convinced year three will take us one step closer to the long-term aim: "winning races and challenging for championships".

Renault has already set a target of being a top three team in terms of mileage completed in pre-season testing - and it is something that Bell thinks is vital.

"Our headline target is to show continued progression through results", said team boss Cyril Abiteboul.

While pace towards the end of the season helped the team to secure sixth place in the constructors' standings, power unit reliability gremlins increased the challenge for Renault and caused headaches for its customer teams Red Bull and Toro Rosso.

The team derives its names from an abbreviation of Renault Sport and the year, a template adopted in 2016 with the R.S.16 when Renault re-assumed control of the Enstone-based team it controlled up through 2010. The power unit has realized a very strong program on the dyno in Viry-Châtillon to maximize performance and improve reliability in preparation for the reduction to just three internal combustion engines (ICE) and two MGU-K and energy stores per season. Renault will continue the Russian connection with Artem Markelov, who is also competing in F2 and has been appointed as a test and development driver with an emphasis on simulator duties at the team's Enstone factory in England.
