The federal government is reopening almost three days after a dispute over immigration forced it to shut down.
Senator McConnell said on Monday morning that the Senate would move ahead with a scheduled procedural vote at noon on a proposal to fund the government through February 8, and he urged his colleagues to put an end to the shutdown.
Senate Democrats bowed to pressure to reopen the government Monday, joining Republicans in backing an immigration and spending compromise that was quickly denounced by liberals and immigration activists. Democrats did not want to support a short-term funding bill unless it includes their immigration demands, including the Deferred Action Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which President Trump recently announced he would end.
In 2013, Schumer was part of a bipartisan group of senators who worked on a sweeping overhaul of the nation's fractured immigration laws. Jacky Rosen and Dina Titus both voted no. The measure also extended a federal children's health insurance program.
"We will make a long-term deal on immigration if, and only if, it's good for our country", the statement concluded. They may discover that they have more in common with members of the other party also interested in competent, responsive government than they do with the ideologues in their own camp. In a second tweet, he said, "Democrats have shut down our government in the interests of their far left base". "It simply would postpone a bitter fight over immigration, which will be very hard to resolve by early February".
Update (4:15 p.m.) The House followed the Senate in passing legislation to reopen the government after a weekend-long shutdown 266-150. Vice President Mike Pence spoke at a news conference Monday afternoon.
Graham - once a strident opponent of Trump's who has developed a cozy relationship with the president over the past few months - said over the weekend that he is skeptical of numerous president's advisers, especially White House senior policy aide Stephen Miller, who push Trump in a conservative direction on immigration as soon as he seems to want a compromise.
Over doughnuts, bagels and muffins, Collins said, the centrists agreed they'd support an end to the shutdown if McConnell could just slightly sweeten an offer he'd made the night before.
Immigration advocates hoped Schumer would see that as badge of honor, but there was anxiety about his resolve.
Pence was joined by Netanyahu for statements at the prime minister's residence before dinner with their spouses. Indeed, 18 Democratic senators ultimately voted for the short-term spending bill that kicked both the budget battle and the immigration fight into the new year. In exchange, McConnell agreed to address Democratic demands that Congress restore protection against deportation to young undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children, known as "dreamers".
The government is expected to be back up and running fully tomorrow, Tuesday.

Initial expectations were for the 20-year old to tie with Ed Sheeran's single "Perfect" on the top of the charts. Only the ballads made my playlist, so unfortunately it looks like I may be "Crying in the Club" sometime soon.
Four congressional leaders will now have 17 days to craft a plan protecting the Dreamers. Yet Republicans refuse to come to the table. They wouldn't run their businesses this way.
"This is the ninth straight year with a continuing resolution", Dunford said.
"I am deeply disappointed that today's outcome fails to protect Dreamers", Gillibrand tweeted.
Essential federal services and military activity are continuing, but even active-duty troops will not be paid until a deal is reached to reopen the U.S. government.
Where is the President: Trump has been active with Republican leaders, aides tell CNN, but other than that he's been out of the picture.
"The reason the Republican majority had such difficulty finding consensus is they could never get a firm grip on what the president of their party wanted to do". They mostly grew up in the United States. We could have avoided the Republican shutdown entirely by passing the bipartisan legislation that already exists to address these issues. They need solutions, not political one-upmanship.
DACA, a presidential initiative under former President Barack Obama, shielded about 800,000 undocumented migrants who were brought to the country illegally as children from deportation before Trump abruptly ended it previous year. Now, thousands are losing their jobs, their status, and their livelihoods.
Trump said past year he would end DACA on March 5 and asked Congress to come up with a legislative fix before then to prevent Dreamers from being deported. Pitting Americans against one another is no way to govern.
"What we've just witnessed on the floor was a cynical decision by Senate Democrats to shove aside millions of Americans for the sake of irresponsible political games", McConnell said.
McConnell's pledge was enough to sway the handful of Democrats he needed to pass the spending bill. Once Mr. Trump signs it, the government will reopen.
