The Carolina Panthers are happy with the job Ron Rivera has done coaching the team and rewarded him with a two-year extension, NFL Network's Tiffany Blackmon reported Saturday morning. Things are in place and we can continue this success.

Rivera's old deal was set to expire after the 2018 season, but he would have been coveted this offseason in a market with six head coach openings.

Rivera's Panthers have a 64-47-1 (.576 winning percentage) regular season record. The Panthers will take on the New Orleans Saints on Sunday for the right to continue competing in the playoffs.

Rivera has been a rock for an organization in the midst of change. It's unclear if the new owners will keep the team in Charlotte. Carolina is ranked seventh in defense this season.

"This is a tremendous place with tremendous support from ownership and the people that work in the organization", Rivera said.

Previously, Rivera was an assistant coach with the San Diego Chargers from 2007-2010, the Chicago Bears from 2004-2006 and 1997-1998, and the Philadelphia Eagles from 1999-2003.
