The other two were vice president of football administration Russ Ball and director of football operations Eliot Wolf. The Packers named Gutekunst the GM before another team could do it first.

Gutekunst has been Green Bay's player personnel director for almost two years, though he has been with the Packers' player personnel department for almost two decades.

Schneider signed a five-year contract extension with the Seahawks in 2016 that provided no "out clause" to Green Bay should a position become available.

Gutekunst was introduced to the Packers as an intern in the team's scouting department in the summe rof 1997, and was hired as a full-time employee by Ron Wolf on December 30, 1998.

Saturday morning NFL's Ian Rapoport tweeted Green Bay had requested an interview with Schneider but was denied. ESPN reported that the Packers also interviewed ex-Buffalo Bills GM Doug Whaley.

Gutekunst, 44, will enter his 20th season with the Packers in 2018.

A UW-La Crosse alum, Gutekunst is the son of John Gutekunst, the head coach at the University of Minnesota from 1985 through 1991.

The San Francisco 49ers previously courted Gutekunst as a general manager candidate last offseason. Some had suggested that, if Ball had gotten the G.M. gig, Gutekunst would have received a title like "executive V.P. of player personnel". By hiring Gutekunst, Green Bay is likely sticking with McCarthy for another season.
